FEL Scotland was invited to partner with Tamfourhill Community Hub to deliver some Fakeaway cooking sessions. Community members asked for this at the Hub, and we were happy to support them with this request. This project is funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Fakeaways are a great idea to make your own healthy affordable meals that replicate your favourite takeaways. The aim of the sessions was to build skills and knowledge, learn something new and provide opportunities to socialise and share a meal together. In the first week we cooked chickpea curry, rice and delicious homemade flat breads. Participants prepared the vegetables and cooked them with curry spices. They then made the flatbreads using yoghurt, flour, baking powder and seasoning and fried them in a dry frying pan. The rice was cooked using the one-part rice to two-parts water method simmering gently for ten minutes with the lid on. We discussed how the curry recipe can be adjusted to include and use up whatever vegetables you have in the fridge to reduce food waste. We were supported by two fantastic FEL volunteers who did a great job of helping us all. The volunteers were pleased to be developing their Fakeaway cooking skills and were keen to try out the recipes at home. Everyone enjoyed sharing the curry together and participants got to take home the leftovers, we all had a great evening together.

The participants were asked what they wanted to learn to cook for the next two sessions which were delivered by staff from Tamfourhill Community Hub and FEL volunteers. They choose Mexican for week two and Chinese for the last session. There was a waiting list for these sessions and there are plans to run more Fakeaway cooking sessions at the Hub in the future.
