Turning Passion into Action: Internships with FEL Scotland
When Michaela Scott and Kelsie Hewines joined FEL Scotland as interns through our the Youth Local Action Group (YLAG) partnership, they became part of a wide range of community projects focused on climate action, inclusion, and local engagement. Hosted by the FEL Forth Valley Climate Action Hub, the internship offered young people the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and see how community-led environmental work takes shape in practice. Reflecting on her time with FEL, Michaela described the internship as one of the most meaningful opportunities she has experienced through YLAG:
“Being a member of the FVL Youth Local Action Group has led to multiple thrilling opportunities for me, yet one of the most significant and fulfilling experiences has been the opportunity to undertake an internship with FEL Scotland.”
From the outset, Michaela felt welcomed into a supportive and motivated team working towards a greener, fairer, and more sustainable Forth Valley. During the internship, she contributed to the SustainAble for All campaign and supported the development of the Eco-Trail Map. She also attended the FEL AGM 2025, visited local community initiatives, and interviewed volunteers about accessibility and what climate change means to them. One of the key takeaways from the experience was gaining insight into the behind-the-scenes work that drives community projects forward:
“I’ve gained extensive knowledge about organisation, communication, and the necessary steps to transform a concept on paper into something that positively affects actual lives. Much more occurs behind the scenes than you might anticipate.”
The internship supported personal growth as well as practical skill development. Michaela reflected on becoming more confident speaking in group settings, improving her organisation skills, and learning to adapt to new challenges, all of which she described as invaluable for future professional journeys. The experience also reinforced the importance of organisations listening to youth voice to help shape communities:
“Young individuals frequently possess innovative viewpoints and imaginative concepts, and FEL and YLAG have demonstrated that organisations are eager to listen to those ideas and assist in realising them. You’re not just learning – you’re adding to something significant.”
Stephi, FEL Climate Action Hub Coordinator, shared her reflections on the initiative and the contribution of the interns:
“Working directly with young people brought fresh perspectives and provided valuable learning for us around meaningful engagement. Michaela and Kelsie were a huge support to our SustainAble for All campaign, visiting local climate action points and conducting interviews that will feed into our Accessible Eco-Trail Map.”
For Michaela, the internship was both rewarding and transformative, building confidence, skills, and a stronger connection to her community through climate action. It stands as a powerful example of how meaningful youth engagement can benefit both young people and the communities they are helping to shape.
