Lunchtime Learning: Community Energy

As part of our adaptation-themed Lunchtime Learning series, this session spotlighted community-led approaches to cutting carbon and boosting energy resilience through practical upgrades and renewable technology. We heard from Business Energy Scotland (BES) and explored a hands-on case study from Gartmore Village Hall.
Key Insights from our Speakers
Business Energy Scotland (BES) Eva Rainey from BES outlined the wide ranging free support available to Scottish SMEs and community groups, including:
- Impartial energy audits and tailored reports
- Advice on energy efficiency and renewable technologies
- Help sourcing trusted installers and preparing funding applications
- Access to the Scottish Government’s interest-free loans and cashback grants for energy-saving upgrades
Note: Current funding includes grants for LED lighting, insulation, air/ground source heat pumps, and solar thermal systems—but not solar PV. BES can still assist with sourcing other funding routes for PV projects.
BES helps community groups overcome key challenges:
- Lack of time/expertise – BES advisers do the legwork, from audits to funding applications.
- Limited technical knowledge – Access to vetted consultants and detailed feasibility reports.
- Finance – Support in accessing loans and grants to reduce upfront costs.
Eva provided a deep dive into viable renewable options, with a particular focus on community buildings including:
- Solar PV – Popular but currently not covered by BES grants; batteries may be eligible.
- Wind and Hydro – Site-specific, long-term investments.
- Heat Pumps and Biomass – High efficiency and eligible for grant/loan support.
- Solar Thermal – Works well alongside heat pumps.
Shared Experience, Gartmore Village Hall Katie Goldie shared her community’s journey upgrading Gartmore Village Hall. Key outcomes:
- Installed 44 solar PV panels, full battery storage, LED lighting, and a new air source heat pump
- Leveraged 80% grant funding from the CARES scheme, topped up by local fundraising and lottery support
- Anticipated energy savings of up to 35% annually
- Highlighted challenges: navigating grant forms, getting multiple quotes, and prolonged application timelines, but ultimately a resounding success
A key point from Katie: the BES report was the essential first step. CARES support followed after, including a dedicated advisor who helped simplify the funding process.
