Flora, Fauna and Floods

Introducing our speakers for our Flora, Fauna and Floods event next week.

We’re pleased to welcome a range of speakers to Callander to explore the challenges of living alongside a river and to consider the wider role of plants and animals in water management, including how we can better understand and respond to recurring flooding.

Over the last year there have been various discussions as part of the Green Adventure Gateway Project for a re-imagining of the Callander Meadows area where one of the visions set out was for riparian planting which would help slow the flow of the water when it bursts its banks. Smartly planted water-loving trees will make some difference to the flow whilst creating further valuable habitat for species.

Headed up by the Callander Community Development Trust, there are plans to carry out some tree planting on the Southern side of the Meadows this winter. They will open our event with an update to the project.

Next, we’ll be joined by Grace Wilding from Forth Rivers Trust, who designed the planting plan and will speak about tree selection and placement.

Nelly Henzler from Riverwoods will introduce the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s multi-year project to create blueprints for river planting initiatives across Scotland, and will highlight some of the Riverwoods sites in the Forth Valley

Tom Bowser from Argaty Red Kites will complete the line up, with experience of introducing beavers to his estate and monitoring their abilities as nature’s natural flood engineers.

We look forward to welcoming you there, including opportunity to add to the conversations and learning from our speakers, with refreshments and snacks available.
