As part of the Forth Valley Climate Action Hub’s Small Grants Programme, Freedom of Mind Community Choir delivered an innovative engagement project using music to inspire climate action. The Climate Action Song workshop empowered choir members to explore the climate crisis, resulting in the development and performance of an original song, “One Little Step”.
The one-day songwriting workshop was supported by our Climate Action Hub team and musician Kim Edgar. Participants engaged in dialogue around environmental issues, personal responsibility, and solutions and translated those ideas into lyrics and melody. The process was deeply meaningful, enhancing understanding of climate issues while also boosting the choir members’ confidence in expressing themselves using holistic creativity.
“The choir are very proud of the new song and find it powerful; they are keen to share it in performance and this builds the confidence of choir community members in making their voice heard when advocating for climate action.”
“One Little Step” has now become a regular part of Freedom of Mind Community Choir’s repertoire, allowing the message of climate action to continue resonating with local audiences. To date, 31 choir members have learned and performed the song, including at dedicated performances in care homes. These engagements have provided an inclusive and accessible way to raise awareness of climate issues, while also reaching intergenerational audiences.
“One Little Step” will feature at a special event and recording for Mental Health Awareness Week in May 2025:

One Little Step – Lyrics by Freedom of Mind Community Choir
Verse 1
Teardrops fall from my saddened eyes
The destruction around us is no surprise
Wildfire, drought, devastation, rains flow
Storms rage, rivers swell – and we all know
We’ve polluted the oceans and dried up the seas
We’re burning the forests and killing the bees
Oceans cry and ice caps recede
A real plan of action is what we need
Pre-Chorus
How can we sing when the earth is dying?
But we can’t be silent – there’s still time for trying…
Chorus
All that we need, just one little step
Plant one tiny seed, just one little step
And we can succeed.
Verse 2
There’s much to do to turn back the clock
Working together, make climate change stop
Just one little step, one at a time
It could be yours or it could be mine
Reduce our waste, don’t buy new things
Upcycle, recycle, reuse belongings
Plant nature kind gardens, allow things to thrive
Do all we can to help nature survive…
Pre-Chorus / Chorus
Bridge
We are the cause, but can be the cure
Working together, we’ll make this earth pure
One little step is all that it takes
Let’s work together – a difference we’ll make
If we take tiny steps, we can learn to relate
Let nature create, let nature create
Chorus
Verse 3
Together, we’ll move from bedlam to bliss
Together, we can change all this
It’s up to us to turn up the heat
On countries and leaders to care, not compete
One little step, let’s work as a team
Make this reality, not just a dream
Each of us, we can walk this road
Help each other, lighten the load…
Pre-Chorus / Chorus
