Celebrating Local Landmarks: FEL’s Active Travel Drawing Competition

06.02.2025 | callum-wilson

Over the past few weeks, pupils from our eight FEL Active Schools Hubs have been busy bringing their favourite local landmarks to life through art. As part of the Local Landmark Drawing Competition, young artists have been illustrating places that hold special meaning to them, ranging from historical monuments to hidden forest den spots. With the competition deadline fast approaching on February 14th, excitement is building to see which entries will be selected to feature in the final Active Travel maps.

This creative FEL Scotland initiative is more than just an art contest. The winning drawings will be incorporated into Active Travel cycling maps of Falkirk, Clackmannanshire, and Stirling. The local landmarks will pop out of the map, helping local communities better understand cycle routes while celebrating the places that matter most to young people. By engaging in this project, pupils are not only showcasing their artistic skills but also contributing to something that will benefit their entire community.

The range of submissions has been incredible. Some pupils have chosen to illustrate iconic war memorials, honouring their town’s history, while others have depicted their local parks, favourite cafés, or even their neighbourhood nail salon. Every drawing tells a personal story, highlighting the diverse ways young people connect with their surroundings. With the competition drawing to a close, anticipation is high as each school’s Active Travel Officer prepares to select the winning entries. The chosen drawings will not only be immortalised in the Active Travel maps but will also earn the winning pupils a £25 gift voucher as a special reward for their efforts.

This project has been an inspiring way for students to engage with their local area and see it from a fresh perspective. By combining creativity with Active Travel awareness, FEL Scotland is helping to foster a sense of community and encourage cycling as a fun and sustainable way to get around. Stay tuned for the announcement of the winning entries and the unveiling of the final maps! For any questions, reach out to your school’s Active Travel officer or email schools@felscotland.org.
