Bike Buddies: Empowering Young Cyclists in Falkirk

26.05.2025 | jemma

At FEL Scotland, we are committed to promoting active travel and fostering healthier, more sustainable communities. Our Bike Buddies programme has been instrumental in achieving this goal, providing free bicycles and essential cycling gear to children who might otherwise lack access. Following the programme’s success in Clackmannanshire, we are excited to announce its expansion into the Falkirk region.

🚴‍♀️ Building on Success in Clackmannanshire

The Bike Buddies initiative began in Clackmannanshire, where it made a significant impact. By supplying free bikes, helmets, locks, and lights to pupils, the programme encouraged active travel and independence among young people. Notably, hundreds of primary pupils in the area began cycling to school, a testament to the programme’s effectiveness.

The initiative also focused on inclusivity, targeting pupils in areas identified as SIMD 1/2 (Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation). By doing so, it ensured that children from disadvantaged backgrounds had the opportunity to engage in cycling, promoting equality and social inclusion.

🌟 Expanding Horizons: Bike Buddies in Falkirk

Building on the momentum from Clackmannanshire, FEL Scotland has extended the Bike Buddies programme to Falkirk. This expansion aims to replicate the success achieved in Clackmannanshire, providing children in Falkirk with the resources and support needed to embrace cycling as a mode of transport and recreation.

The programme’s implementation in Falkirk involves collaboration with local schools and community organisations, ensuring that the initiative is tailored to the specific needs of the area. By working closely with these stakeholders, FEL Scotland aims to create a sustainable and impactful programme that benefits the wider community.

🔧 Comprehensive Support for Young Cyclists

Beyond providing bicycles and safety equipment, Bike Buddies offers comprehensive support to young cyclists. This includes:

  • Cycle Training: Ensuring that children have the skills and confidence to ride safely.
  • Maintenance Workshops: Teaching basic bike maintenance to promote self-sufficiency.
  • Community Engagement: Organising group rides and events to foster a sense of community among young cyclists.

These components are designed to create a holistic approach to cycling, encouraging long-term engagement and fostering a culture of active travel.

Looking Ahead: A Sustainable Future

The expansion of Bike Buddies into Falkirk represents a significant step towards promoting active travel across Scotland. By providing children with the tools and support needed to embrace cycling, FEL Scotland is contributing to a healthier, more sustainable future.

As the programme continues to grow, we remain committed to evaluating its impact and refining our approach to ensure that it meets the evolving needs of the communities we serve.
