Bannockburn House: History Meets Climate Action

Bannockburn House, a site rich in history and community value, was also a proud recipient of a 2025 Climate Action Grant. Delivered through FEL Scotland’s Forth Valley Climate Action Hub, and in partnership with Scotland’s International Environment Centre at the University of Stirling, the funding formed part of the ambitious City Region Deal designed to empower local climate action.
With its 17th-century architecture and expansive grounds, Bannockburn House offers a unique opportunity to connect heritage with sustainability. Thanks to the grant, the team was able to scale up its climate-conscious activities, focusing particularly on regenerative land use, sustainable gardening, and community engagement.
The funding supported the creation of a woodland skills training programme, enhanced biodiversity planning, and the development of outdoor learning spaces. These initiatives align with the site’s ethos of learning from the past while building a sustainable future.
“This grant helped us show that historic properties can be part of the climate solution,” said a project volunteer. “It’s not just about conserving the building; it’s about caring for the land and engaging the community in how we do that.”
Bannockburn House also engaged local volunteers in habitat surveys, wildflower planting, and eco-heritage trails—bringing together nature, learning and history. Importantly, the project created new partnerships with schools, colleges and other community organisations, deepening the reach of its environmental message.
As they look ahead, the team is exploring ways to make the estate a model for sustainability in heritage settings. Plans include installing low-carbon heating, developing a green action plan for all events, and continuing to use the house and grounds as a space for community-driven climate learning.
Both Bannockburn House and Hawkhill Community Centre demonstrate the powerful role local organisations can play in climate resilience—each rooted in place, but reaching outward with ambition and impact.
