Balfron School Hub
The Balfron High School Active Travel Hub launched in 2023, making it the second school in Stirling to establish an Active Travel Hub, alongside Bannockburn High School. Balfron High School faces unique barriers to Active Travel posed by the school’s rural location. Many pupils live considerable distances from the school, so the hub focuses on developing their skills on bikes, skateboards, and scooters, helping them gain the confidence to travel actively within their local community. Innovative solutions include route planning that takes bus travel into account, so students arrive at school via a mix of public transport and skateboards or scooters, that are easily carried on buses.
At the school, the Hub engages students through led walks and community outreach events. The three yearly competitions, Cycle to School Week, Step Count Challenge, and Walk to School Week, have seen strong participation, with many prizes awarded to enthusiastic participants. Balfron was the pilot project for Paths for All Walk Leader accreditation training for senior students, and the enthusiasm shown by participants led to rolling out this partnership to many of our other Active Travel Schools Hubs.
